On Thursday, August 31st, Studio 164 and A Better Today Recovery Services are hosting Time to Remember, Time to Act- on International Overdose Awareness Day. Studio 164, a recovery meeting hall founded just this year and A Better Today Recovery Services, a substance abuse treatment center located here in the Valley, are looking to support and bring hope to those who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction as well as take part in raising awareness during this global event.
With the opioid epidemic America is currently facing, there is no better time to raise awareness. Seeing the faces of those who have been lost due to overdose, will in no doubt be a bold reminder of why we as a community must take action to help address the opioid crisis. A Better Today Recovery Services will be there to offer support and resources for those who are still struggling with addiction as well as have bracelets available to help raise awareness beyond the event.
It is easy to stand on the outside of the opioid epidemic and see the ones who were lost to overdose as just “addicts”, until the loss becomes personal. Studio 164 and A Better Today Recovery Services wants to do their best to represent the truth of those lost. The truth is that these people were more than just “addicts”, they were sons, daughters, mothers and fathers. People who ended up in the grips of addiction and did not make it.
Opioid addiction has become like a war, with the death toll rising each day. Last year, there were up to 65,000 deaths from drug overdoses in America and in Arizona alone, the toll rose to almost 800. The numbers continue to increase, while the stigma of addiction is causing many to hide in shame and prevents many from seeking treatment. There is no simple, cut and dry answer for how to end this crisis, but we can start by raising awareness and saving one life at time by making substance abuse treatment available to those in need.
This event is a safe place where friends and family can share memories and share their story with people who understand and empathize. If you have lost a loved one to addiction, or even if you would just like to do your part in bringing awareness to the opioid epidemic, you are welcome to attend.
The address for Studio 164 is, 13627 N. 32ND Street, Phoenix, AZ 85032. It takes place on Thursday, August 31st. Opening remarks will begin at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments, a chance to share memories, as well as a candlelight vigil will follow. Studio 164 and A Better Today Recovery Services want this to be a day of remembrance, and a way to start important conversation about the opioid epidemic. It is so important to come together for such a time as this.
